Eve Nañez is the Indigenous Event Coordinator, Reed College Multicultural Resource Center. In this session of our anti-racism series, she talks about the traumatic real origins of the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, as distinct from the mythology celebrated in popular culture. In addition to contextualizing historical events and their consequences for native people today, this workshop goes on to explore ways in which reparations can begin to be made. What Needs to Change – Dismantling White Supremacy with Markisha Smith, EdD
Dr Markisha Smith, Director, City of Portland Office of Equity & Human Rights joins AAUW of Oregon to discuss white supremacy and cultural systemic oppression. From an exploration of the meaning of “culture,” to examples of overt and covert white supremacy, Dr Smith helps us better understand how white supremacy is embedded in our cultural “norms.”
